Demopolis Middle stays unbeaten

The Demopolis Middle School football team pushed its record to 7-0 Monday night with a 16-6 home victory over Thomasville.

The hosting Tigers threw a Pick-6 in the closing seconds of the first half to fall behind heading into intermission. The miscue came one possession after Demopolis drove the ball to the Thomasville goal line on a 53-yard Demetrius Davis run before fumbling it away. That sequence followed a 58-yard scoring run by Logan that was negated by a blocking infraction.

Demopolis responded on the first possession of the second half when Russ Logan went over the top to Xavier Jowers for a 38-yard touchdown pass. Logan then added the two-point conversion run to take the 8-6 lead.

After another Demopolis turnover, the DMS defense stiffened as Jackson Lay forced and recovered a fumble to give the ball back to the Demopolis offense.

After a DMS punt, Thomasville resumed possession with less than three minutes to play in the contest. Derrick Birl ended the Thomasville hopes when he scooped and scored on a 29-yard fumble return with 1:57 to go. A.J. Jackson punched in the two-point conversion run to ice the game at 16-6.

The win keeps Demopolis in the No. 1 seed as it races to host the championship game for the Highway 43 Cup. DMS is set to travel to host Grove Hill Monday.
