Demopolis golf wins first match of season

The Demopolis High School golf team opened its spring season Tuesday, March 14 in Thomasville with temperatures in the high 40s and winds at 10 -20 miles per hour.The Tiger golfers took on Thomasville, Jackson and Washington County in the match. . The Tigers won the opening matches despite boasting a young team.

Demopolis returns one player from the 2016 squad in sophomore Luke Reid. The squad also features four boys entering their first year of high school golf: juniors Austin Hall and Jackson Lay and junior high players Bill Stephens and Jay Bell.

Lay fired a match-best 41 while Reid shot a nine-hole 42, which left him in a second place tie. Hall, Stephens and Bell shot 49, 51 and 58 respectively to help aid in the Tiger win.

Golf coach Greg Rhyne said he is extremely pleased with the results of the opening match and offered special thanks to The Ravine Golf Course and the Demopolis County Club for allowing the young men and ladies to practice at their courses.

The boys and girls golf teams will travel to Centreville to play West Blocton March 21.
