Demopolis gets first win of season

OZARK – Demopolis (1-1) got its first win of the season Tuesday with a 56-54 victory over Barbour County in the Carroll Thanksgiving Tournament.

“I thought we played hard and aggressive. We came out and pushed the ball. We shared the basketball and we knocked down a few shots,” Demopolis coach Rodney Jackson said. “Barbour County is good year in and year out. I think they are going to be a quality team again this year. But I thought my team competed real hard. And you saw some of those jitters go away from the first game.”

The Tigers felled the 3A Jaguars with a 15-13 fourth quarter run. Demopolis got 20 points from Kiante Jeffries and 13 from Demetrius Kemp in the win. James Grubbs led Barbour County with 20 points.

“We went and attacked the glass,” Jackson said. “If we keep getting good effort like that, I think we’ll be a pretty good team in the middle and end of January.”

Demopolis will play its final game in the tournament Wednesday at 3 p.m. when it faces Dothan.
