Demopolis cruises to Wilcox win

CAMDEN — Demopolis (7-1, 6-0) dominated with both its starters and reserves Friday night, amassing 358 yards in a 53-8 win over Wilcox-Central.

“They did good tonight. They didn’t get many reps. I think we had three possessions with our first offense and about four with our defense,” Demopolis coach Stacy Luker said. “I thought they executed. We asked them to come out in a game like this, take care of their business, and they did that.”

The Tigers opened the scoring with a 10-yard Jay Craig touchdown run in the first quarter. A.J. Collier intercepted a pass and returned it 64 yards to stretch the lead to 13-0. It was the third such play for Collier in two games.

Logan McVay caught a Jamarcus Ezell screen pass and punched it in from eight yards out to give the Tigers a 20-0 lead.

McCoy added to the lead on the first play of the second quarter when he fielded a Wilcox punt on the hop and returned it 67 yards for a touchdown.

Drew Jones scored on a 2-yard run for the 33-0 lead. Keishaun Scott then snagged a Jaguar pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown, setting the halftime advantage at 39-0 for Demopolis.

Wilcox got its lone touchdown against Tiger reserves in the third quarter to cut it to 39-8. William Wilkins moved the lead to 45-8 with a 2-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. A.J. Jackson sprinted in from 47 yards out for the final touchdown of the game. Antonio Besteder added the conversion to cap the scoring.

Alexander Besteder and Rod Gaines also intercepted passes for the Demopolis defense.

“Alexander Besteder is going to be a really good player and Rod Gaines had a beautiful one-handed interception on our sidelines,” Luker said.

The Tigers split the rushing attempts over a slew of ballcarriers. Jackson had seven carries for 76 yards. Wilkins had eight carries for 75 yards. Scott had 65 yards on two carries while Craig had 59 yards on eight runs.

Demopolis clinches the No. 1 seed in Class 5A, Region 4 with the win. Wilcox sees its losing streak extend to 23 games.

Demopolis hosts Dallas County next Friday night.
