Demopolis baseball splits Saturday tilt

The Demopolis High School varsity baseball team got a stellar start from R.J. Cox to key a 7-5 victory over Chilton County Saturday afternoon.

Cox (1-0) worked four innings, striking out two while scattering three hits and three walks and allowing one earned run.

Jacob Rodrigues picked up the save, allowing an unearned run and striking out four over three innings of work.

The Tigers trailed 1-0 in the third inning before hanging five on the board in the home half and adding two more in the bottom of the fourth for the 7-1 lead.

Rodrigues went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Jamarcus Ezell finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.

Ryan Schroeder was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Wil Stephens was 1-for-3 with a double. Tripp Perry scored a run. Seth Aiken went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Luke Yelverton finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Tigers followed with a 9-2 loss to Northridge. The teams were even at 2-2 through one inning of play before NHS hung three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Yelverton took the loss, working three and a third innings and striking out four batters while surrendering three earned runs and two unearned. Perry and Jay Craig worked the remainder of the contest for the Tigers.

Ezell finished 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Cox was 1-for-2 with a double. Perry finished 1-for-3 while Clay White went 1-for-1 in his lone plate appearance.

Demopolis (3-3) is set to play again Monday in Montgomery as part of the FCA Tournament.
