Demopolis 2016 football schedule includes two 7A schools

The Demopolis Tigers’ 2016 football schedule includes a pair of 7A foes and the renewal of one local rivalry.

As was announced by the AHSAA last week, the Tigers are set to open their season Thursday, Aug. 18 against Class 6A Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa in the Champions Challenge at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery. That contest pits Demopolis against a team it has played 20 times since 1983. The Tigers and Patriots played every year from 2008 to 2014 with Demopolis going 2-4 over that span. The Tigers are 7-13 all time in the series. The Patriots finished 8-4 in 2015.

Demopolis has its home opener Friday, Aug. 26 when it hosts Class 4A Greensboro in the renewal of a long-standing rivalry that has not been played since 2007. Demopolis and Greensboro played from 1934 to 2007 without interruption with the Tigers going 46-24 in the series including a dominant run that included eight straight wins from 2000 to 2007. Greensboro finished 5-6 a season ago under Richard Bevill.

Demopolis begins Class 5A, Region 3 play Friday, Sept. 2 at Central-Tuscaloosa. The ever game Falcons went 5-5 in 2015. The schools have met four times since 2010 with Demopolis going 4-0 with an average margin of victory of 31 points.

Friday, Sept. 9 has Demopolis hosting Class 5A, Region 3 newcomer Marbury. The Deatsville-based Bulldogs, who are riding an eight-game losing streak after finishing the 2015 campaign at 2-8, have never played Demopolis.

Friday, Sept. 16 has Demopolis back on the road as it travels to Calera to face another region foe. The Tigers are 2-0 in the series, which began in 2014. Calera finished at 7-4 last season.

Demopolis takes an open date Friday, Sept. 23 before hosting region opponent Dallas County Friday, Sept. 30. Demopolis is 15-0-1 in the lifetime series. A much improved Dallas County team finished at 6-5 in 2015.

The Tigers host Sumter Central Friday, Oct. 7, marking the fifth straight season the two schools have met. Demopolis is 4-0 overall and has outscored the Jaguars 156-21. Sumter finished 2-8 in 2015.

Demopolis steps out of region play Friday, Oct. 14 when it takes one of its longest trips of the season to face Class 7A Enterprise. Some 89 miles apart, the schools have never met before. The Wildcats finished 5-6 in the inaugural season the AHSAA Class 7A play.

Traveling some 360 miles in a two-week span, Demopolis hits the road again Friday. Oct. 21 when it travels to face Class 5A, Region 3 foe Jemison. Demopolis is 4-0 overall against Jemison, defeating the Panthers 70-0 last season. Jemison was 2-7 in 2015.

Demopolis wraps the regular season Friday, Aug. 28 when it hosts Class 7A Auburn. Demopolis fell to Auburn 24-16 last season, the only meeting between the two schools. Auburn finished the campaign at 7-5.
