County commission approves portable voting location

LINDEN — Racing through its regular meeting in 20 minutes, the Marengo County Commission unanimously approved several items on its agenda.

Members then went into an executive session which took more than three times longer than the regular session, after which they took no action.

In the regular session, Demopolis Delivery Service, the only bidder, again this year was awarded the Summer Feeding Program contract. The company bid $15,000 to travel more than 300 miles a day to deliver meals to sites throughout the county.

Probate Judge Laurie Hall presented several options for providing a portable voting location to replace the site at the Old Courthouse in Linden. The new location will be the parking lot across Highway 43 from the Courthouse.

After listening to the options, the Commission voted to approve a 14-by-45-foot portable unit provided by William Scottsman out of Moody, Ala., for $6,139.49, subject to approval by Probate Judge Laurie Hall and county engineer Ken Atkins.

The county still would have to build a ramp for handicapped access and provide electricity to the unit, said Hall. She added that the cost of the unit should be reimbursed to the county through the Help America Vote Act.

Hall said notification will be sent out soon on the changes in location of four voting sites in the county.

Appointed to the Marengo County Department of Human Resources Board were Charlotte Webb, District 3; Shirley Hudson, District 4, and R.C. Watts, District 5.

Atkins asked the media attending the meeting to remind candidates for office that political signs may not be placed on county rights-of-way. He said his department will be bushhogging the roads and will not go around any signs in the way.

Atkins requested approval of five resolutions from the Commission as part of the procedure to receive funds for road work under the Rural Assistance Matching Program. The five projects include: bridges on County Roads 38 and 44; resurfacing a section of County Road 53; resurfacing a section of County Roads 7 and 20; resurfacing a section of County Road 44, and a bridge on Jackson Street in Demopolis.

In other action the Commission voted unanimously to:

• Add Trout Lane, Richardson Drive, Plum Drive and Fountain Drive to the Public Roads List.

• Approve the renewal of the contract with Advanced Disposal for three years with no changes. The contract expires in October of 2015.

• Approve a resolution to change the tax sale location in case of inclement weather.

• Permit Meredith Hammond to attend the Administrators Conference May 14-15 in Orange Beach.

• Approve the EMA and Tobacco Tax CD rate of .75 Percent for six months with Sweet Water State Bank.
