Clayton Sluder

Clayton Ellis Sluder, age 80, of the Valley community, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at home. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Pepple and Pastor Charles Walters officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Kirk Funeral Homes Greensboro Chapel directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Clayton Douglas Sluder; his parents, Clayton Sluder and Frances Rhymer Sluder; a great-grandson, Wallace Garner Mitchell III; a sister, Helen Sluder Clark of Asheville, N.C.; and brothers, Conley James Sluder of Marion and Raymond Sluder of Weaverville, N.C.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Calhoun Sluder; three daughters, Selena Billadeau and husband, Thomas of Fairhope, and Tina Mitchell and husband, Dave, and Lisa Wilson and husband, Erskine, both of Marion; nine grandchildren, Wade Sluder (Patti), Monica Crawford (Chris), Wallace Mitchell (Jennifer), Matthew Mitchell (Amber), Brad Wilson, and Andrew Wilson, all of Marion, A.J. Billadeau (Lauran) and Bryan Billadeau, both of Fairhope, and Shane Wilson (Beth) of Tuscaloosa; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Sluder was born October 12, 1932, in Asheville, North Carolina. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Church. He enjoyed going to church, and he loved his family. He retired from the University of Alabama in 1994. After retiring, he had many hobbies. He enjoyed working at his sawmill. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed cattle farming and gardening.

Pallbearers will be Wade Sluder, Chris Crawford, Wallace Mitchell, Matthew Mitchell, Bryan Billadeau, Brad Wilson, Andrew Wilson, and Don Clements.

Honorary pallbearers are Mike Kynard, Comfort Care Hospice, Alabama Home Respiratory, Hale County Hospital Home Health, and the Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Fund or the American Cancer Society.
