City, river cleanup efforts launch Friday

Volunteers are urged to join Alabama Power and the City of Demopolis as well as the Demopolis Rotary Club for a community-wide cleanup effort this weekend.

The effort is part of the Renew Our Rivers and Renew Our City initiatives. Cleanup crews will meet on all four Demopolis City Schools campuses Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. to take part in a city-wide cleanup.

The Renew Our Rivers community cleanup will be held Friday and Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. each day.

Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanups, have collected more than 1 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 30 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers and various lakes throughout the state.
