Arnold Wilford Hughey Sr.

Arnold Wilford Hughey Sr. 93, of Marion, passed away January 14, 2018, at Bibb Medical Center. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:30 Friday January 19, 2018, at Siloam Baptist Church with Rev. John Nicholson officiating and Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel directing. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m Thursday January 18, 2018, at the funeral home.

Arnold was born May 5, 1924, in Sprott, to Andrew Jackson and Buena Osborn Hughey.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Breland Hughey; daughter, Rebecca Holtzclaw of Daphne; sons, Arnold Wilford Hughey of Venice, Fl., Joseph Morland Hughey of Theodore, Al. and Steven Andrew Hughey of Atlanta, Ga.; daughters, Sue Crocker Hughey and Karen K. Hughey; brother, Edward Murray Hughey; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.

LaVerne Gibbons West

LaVerne Gibbons West 99, of Demopolis, passed away January 13, 2018, at Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital. Services will be held 2 p.m Tuesday, January 16, 2018, from Kirk Funeral Homes Demopolis Chapel with Rev. Mike Swims officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

LaVerne was born July 26, 1918, in Arkansas, to Joseph and Addie Mary Black Gibbons.

She was preceded by her parents; husband, James L. West; sister, Dorothy Walker; brothers, Jack, Carrell, Leck and Ray Gibbons.

Survivors are her daughters, Teresa Malone of Demopolis and Patti West of Auburn; sons, Kenneth West of Colorado Springs, Co., Dennis West of Knoxville, Tn., Gary West of Knoxville, Tn. and Bruce West of Austin, Tx.; brother, Joe Gibbons of Fort Worth, Tx., 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Robbie Malone, Brian Malone, Jake Malone, Alex West and Kit Slayden.

Nell S. Martin a homemaker of Lamison, AL died January 11, 2018, at Camden Nursing Facility. She was born March 30, 1931 in Arlington, AL to Morgan G. and Willie Eliza Stoudenmier. She was a member of County Line Baptist Church.

She is survived by her six sons, Robert Wyatt (Linda) Jordan, James Clayton (Patti) Jordan, Jimmy Ray (Diane) Jordan, Leonard Allen (Carla) Jordan, Rodney Lynn (Rena) Jordan, and Milton Clyde (Angie) Jordan; three daughters, Patricia (Joe) McGilberry, June (Barry) Parker, and Evelyn (Kennon) Agee; 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Milton C. Jordan and Lewis Martin; her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Jordan; an infant son; and her parents, Morgan G. and Willie Eliza Stoudenmier.

Visitation will be held at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home on Sunday, January 14, 2018 from 1:00 pm until the 2:00 pm service time with Rev. Rex Jackson and Rev. Benny Harrison officiating. Burial will follow at County Line Baptist Church Cemetery in Arlington, AL

Martha Ann Dozier age 77 of Thomasville, AL died January 9, 2018 at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, AL. She was born July 6, 1940 in Grove Hill, AL to James Wesley and Martha Elizabeth Tucker. She was a former music teacher and a member of Lower Peachtree United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, Jack Wesley Dozier.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jack L. Dozier and her parents.

Private graveside services were held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens on Saturday, January 13, 2018 with Rev. Paul McVay officiating.

Jeanette Lynn Gates age 74 a homemaker of Sweet Water, AL died January 9, 2018 at Mobile Infirmary. She was born February 16, 1943 in Sweet Water, AL to Charles Allen and Mary Elizabeth Lynn. She attended Crossroad Community Church in Dixons Mills, AL.

She is survived by her husband, David S. Gates, two sons, Tony (Leigh Ann) Gates and Tracy Gates; daughter, Janice Nicole Gates; brother, Allen Lynn; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at O’Bryant Chapel Funeral Home on Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am service time with Rev. Glenn Akridge officiating. Burial will follow at Paynes Chapel Cemetery in Sweet Water, AL.

Bernice I. Benham

Bernice I. Benham, age 94 of Demopolis, Al and formerly of Rosewood, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 in Alabama.

Born on April 25, 1923 in Lena (Miami County), Ohio she was the daughter of the late Charles “Gus” and Mary (Covault) Harmon. She married John Van Horn on January 20, 1943 and he was killed in France during WWII in March 1945. Together they had two children, Robert Van Horn, deceased, and Joyce Buroker of Demopolis, AL. She married Dale W. Benham on November 18, 1947 and he preceded her on February 5, 2017. Together they had a son Charles Benham who survives in Lewis Center, OH. Bernice is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A brother, Norman “Bud” Harmon survives in Rosewood along with several nieces and nephews.

Bernice was a 1941 graduate of Rosewood High School. She and Dale were the former owners of B & B Grocery in Rosewood. She was a member of the Rosewood United Methodist Church.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 10:00 a.m in the Rosedale Cemetery, N. St. Rt. 235, Conover with Reverend Andy Leighty presiding. Atkins-Shively Funeral Home is serving the family. Condolences may be sent to www.shivelyfuneralhomes.com.
