Caroline King Compton Matthews

Caroline King Compton Matthews, age 92, of Demopolis, passed away October 1, 2015, at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa after a lengthy illness. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Prairieville with the Revs. George McKee and J. D. Barnes officiating and Kirk Funeral Homes Demopolis Chapel directing.

Caroline was born January 9, 1923, in Gallion, Alabama. She was the daughter of Pearson Grady Compton and Martha Lou Weaver Compton. She graduated from Demopolis High School in 1941, attended Judson College in 1941-42 and Duke University, graduating with an A.B. in 1945.

She married the love of her life, Robert “Bobby” Matthews on August 20, 1945, and they remained deeply devoted to each other until his death in 2001.

Caroline worked at West Alabama Mental Health Center from 1969 to 2002, and touched many lives with her work there.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She is survived by her sons, Robert “Chip” Matthews of Montgomery, Texas and Pearson Matthews (Ann) of Birmingham; grandson, Will Matthews of Houston, Texas; nieces, Burns Carnes (Jerry) of Tuscaloosa and Floy Mayberry (Jim) of Demopolis, and nephew, Mel Levy (Cheryl) of Birmingham; namesakes, Caroline Levy, Caroline Collins Wilson and Caroline Rutledge Teel; and many close friends, including Sadie Johnson.

Pallbearers will be David Turner, Charles Holmes, Dana McCants, John Northcutt, Rut Rutledge, Jim Stanford, Ricki Teel, and Duke Wilson.
