Six students were honored as recipients of $1,500 scholarships from the Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary at its annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Thursday.

The auxiliary also recognized its Volunteer of the Year, voted on by members. For the first time the award went to two people because of a tie vote. Recipients were Marge Reinecke and Hester Brown.

Staff from the hospital, including administrator Art Evans, served scholarship recipients, their families and auxiliary members at Lyon Hall.

Amid laughter and applause, auxiliary coordinator Stephanie Hoggle handed out humorous awards to each of the members and brought volunteers up to date on all they had accomplished during the year.

All the scholarships went to students who are studying or plan to study in a healthcare field. Receiving the Carolyn S. McCormick Award for children and grandchildren of Tombigbee Healthcare Authority (THA) employees were Jeremy Chu and Bailey Petrey.

The Emmett and Carolyn Clinckscales scholarships went to Alyssa Nickens, Lakendra Bruno, Grey Lewis and Rachel England. The award goes to individuals who live within the medical service area of the THA.
