Bulldogs down Thomasville in opener

Sweet Water worked around a handful of hiccups Monday to beat Thomasville 5-3 in its season opener. The Bulldogs used a two-run fifth inning to put Jonah Smith in line for the win. Sasha Smith singled through the six hole to score Luke Davis and tie the game 3-3 with two away in the frame. Smith later scored on an error to give his team the 4-3 lead.

Sweet Water added an insurance run in the home half of the sixth when Will Huckabee scored on an error.

Sweet Water opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. Braden Broussard stole third base before scoring on a double steal that left John Thomas Etheridge at second. Flynn Mabowitz followed with a run-scoring single to drive in Etheridge. Thomasville answered in the third when it used three singles, a walk and a pair of errors to take a 3-2 lead.

Jonah Smith tossed five strong innings for the win, striking out nine while surrendering six hits, a walk and one earned run. Etheridge slammed the door for the save, working two hitless innings and striking out three.

Mabowitz, Broussard and Sasha Smith notched the only three Bulldog hits. Luke Davis and Broussard stole two bases each while Etheridge and Chastian Washington swiped one apiece.
