Big plays lift Patrician over Sumter

YORK — Patrician Academy scored on plays of 49, 63, 65, 31 and 60 yards en route to a 42-21 victory over Sumter Academy Friday.

Patrician’s Devin Black scored on a 49-yard run on the game’s opening possession to give the visiting Saints a 7 -0 lead. Sumter answered that scoring drive with one of its own, scoring on a 21-yard pass from Clay Truelove to Anderson Newman.

Patrician added its second score of the night on a 63-yard touchdown reception by Kaleb Sessions. Truelove tied the score at 14 -14, culminating a long Sumter drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to end the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Patrician scored on Kaleb Sessions runs on 65 and 31 yards to take a 28-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter was a scoreless affair as neither team could put together a scoring drive. Black would score on the first play of the fourth quarter to put the Saints ahead 35-14 and then extended the lead to 42-14 with a 60-yard touchdown run on the team’s next possession.

Sumter added a late touchdown on an 11-yard pass from Truelove to Zach Maness for the 42-21 final.

Truelove rushed for 142 yards on 31 carries and was 13-for-30 passing for 141 yards. Nathan Williamson rushed for 73 yards on 13 attempts. Blake Jowers led the receivers with five catches for 50 yards. Maness had two receptions for 46 yards and Newman had three for 35 yards.

Sessions led Patrician with 171 yards rushing while Black added 166 yards on the ground.

Blaine Winsett tallied seven tackles for the Eagles. Logan Atcheson had five. Lane Duke intercepted a Patrican pass for his third on the season.

Sumter will take on Pickens Academy, Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. Senior night activities will take place before the game as Sumter will recognize senior football players Nathan Williamson, Blake Jowers, Blaine Winsett, Zach Maness and Lane Duke and senior cheerleaders Katy Kelley, Christina Pruitt and Keri Bryan.
