ALJ’s Ford wins 1A Coach of the Year
The Alabama Sports Writers association released its annual All-State basketball teams late Tuesday night. The teams bestow statewide honors on boys and girls players in each of the seven AHSAA classes as well as the AISA. The teams include First, Second and Third team designations as well as honorable mentions in each class.
Included on the 2015 team are three Marengo County players and one Marengo County coach. In the AISA, Andrea Edmonds earned Third Team honors. On her way to play softball at the University of West Alabama, Edmonds finished her basketball career by averaging 11.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game for the Lady Longhorns.
Tiffany Barber earned Third Team distinction for Class 1A girls. Barber averaged 15.5 points per game while leading A.L. Johnson to an area championship and a sub-regional appearance after it had won no games in the previous two seasons.
On the boys side, Shermon Kennedy took Third Team honors for the A.L. Johnson boys. Kennedy averaged 14.6 points per game and won the South Regional MVP Award after the Eagles downed Georgiana to make their first appearance in the state semifinals.
For his efforts in the A.L. Johnson run, Johnney Ford earned the ASWA nod for Class 1A Coach of the Year. Ford led his squad to its first semifinal appearance in school history despite it not having won a measurable amount of games the previous two seasons.
