Demopolis, Ala. – 12-3-2015 – Rebecca Hasty (right) named Martha Griffith (left) as St. Nick for COTR 2015 at the Demopolis square on Thursday night.

In front of a festive crowd on hand in Public Square Thursday evening, Rebecca Hasty announced long-time Demopolis pillar Martha Griffith as the 27th St. Nick honoree.

“It means I don’t deserve it. This is just not my cup of tea. I don’t like the spotlight,” Griffith said after receiving the distinction. “But I am so honored. I can’t tell you. It’s something I’ve never dreamed would happen to me, but I appreciate it so, so much.”

The honor, which goes to an individual who is said to exemplify the spirit of Christmas year round through commitment to helping the community’s young people, will see Griffith involved in the Christmas on the River festivities throughout the weekend.

The St. Nick selection committee chose Griffith, who has lived in Demopolis for 85 years, over a pool of nominees that included Joseph Barnes and Dr. Ronnie Chu.
